ZINEBILAB

For the ninth year in a row, ZINEBI 51 once again includes ZINEBILAB, a seminar-workshop for students, young directors and experts in audiovisual production that the Festival organises in collaboration with the Basque Producers Association (EPE-APV), Media Antena Euskal Herria and the University of the Basque Country (EHU-UPV). This year ZINEBILAB is devoting a monographic seminar to the production of low-budget images in the digital world.

To help us to do this various professionals will be taking part who have experience in creating, producing, shooting, promoting and distributing this kind of work: the Spanish filmmaker Alberto Rodríguez, whose suggestive career includes the full-length films, Factor Pilgrim (2000), El traje (2002), 7 vírgenes (2005) and his very latest film, the complex, disturbing After (2009), will be sharing with the participants the ups and downs he had putting together his early shorts and his switch to feature films; the British director, Chris Jones, will be telling us about his experience as the author and editor of The Guerrilla Filmmakers Handbook, a benchmark publication and a platform among independent filmmakers all over the world since it came out in the 1990s; the American director and producer Freida Lee Mock, an Oscar winner for the documentary Maya Lin: A Strong Vision (1994), and candidate on several other occasions for the same award and a current member of the Academy, for which she is one of the people in charge of selecting shorts for the annual competition for the internationally recognised statuette, will be explaining the procedure and criteria that govern this selection complex, that the ZINEBI Awards form part of as a collaborating festival. This representative of the Oscars will be accompanied in her presentation by her fellow American, Jessica Sanders, a young producer and director who was a candidate for an Oscar in 2002 as the producer of the documentary short Sing! and won the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Festival in 2005 for her documentary After Innocence. ZINEBILAB will also be staging the presentation of the distribution platform KIWI MEDIA, that has created a wide range of TV channels for mobile phone screens and has become one of the most important channel operators for this type of media in Europe, which has enabled it to be at the forefront of the latest trends in audiovisual programming in the new global communication media; As far as the practical workshop is concerned, the young Basque director of photography, Gaizka Bourgeaud, will be running the practical sessions that participants will have with the Canon’s new flagship on the digital video and photography market. Launched at the end of 2008, the new camera, christened the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, has quickly become the working tool that is most commonly used by new (and not so new) filmmakers from all over the world, although its results have sometimes been controversial. The pictures produced at this workshop can be studied and analysed during the 51st ZINEBI Festival.

The seminar-workshop will be held at: the Museum of Fine Art Auditorium and Barrainkua Municipal Centre
