African frames. 65 tears of light and shade (1944-2009)

In collaboration with the Cultural Attaché at the French Embassy in Spain, Kalao arte negro, the gallery in Bilbao that specialises in modern African art, the Tarifa African Film Festival (FCAT) and the Ouagadougou Pan-African Television and Film Festival (FESPACO), this is an extraordinary look at some little-known aspects of African cinema. This sample provides an overview of the latest work by young short film makers from Senegal (such as Douts Ndoye, Piniang, Diana Gaye or Abdoul Aziz Cissé), the most representative films by Jean Rouch and René Vautier, the two great French pioneers of anti-colonialist and ethnographic cinema on the continent, images that have practically never been seen before of the Spanish colonial administration in Equatorial Guinea filmed in the 1940s by Manuel Hernández Sanjuán, the 2008 Prize winners of the aforementioned FCAT and FESPACO and Africalls, a full-length documentary, directed by the young Catalan filmmakers, Pere Ortín and Vic Pereiró, about contemporary artistic creative work in the great African cities.

René Vautier (Camaret, Brittany, 1928), the great French filmmaker who has made his life and profession a relentless struggle for freedom, particularly for freedom of speech, will be attending the season in Bilbao as a special guest of the 51st Festival. Considered by many to be the most censored man in France, Vautier formed part of the resistance against the Nazis when he was 16, filmed in Africa in 1950 what is now considered to be the first anti-colonialist film, turned the workers’ demands in his country into pictures, then took part in the Algerian struggle for independence and has always devoted his work as a filmmaker to causes like the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, racism and the far right in France, environmental pollution, and in support of women and their rights. We will be able to see three of this genuine man of action’s seminal films: his pioneering classic Afrique 50 (1950), Peuple en marche (1963) and Avoir 20 ans dans les Aurès (1972). We will also see René Vautier, l’indomptable, the documentary shot in 1996 by Jacques Royer for Canal + about his life and his way of understanding cinema.
